Massive ice sheets and receding glaciers have carved out Mont Tremblant and the rest of the Laurentian Mountain chain. The first people to live here were the Algonquin, who named the mountain “Manitonga Soutana” or trembling mountain because they believe the spirit of the Creator or “Grand Manitou” makes the mountain shake and tremble with storms. Later in the early 1800s, French-Canadian settlers found this rugged region unsuited to farming but teeming with timber. Here is the story of some of the pioneers and events that have made Tremblant what it is today.

Curé Antoine Labelle, a parish priest, is convinced that the area will become popular with vacationers seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of Montreal. He successfully lobbies for the construction of the “P'tit Train du Nord” running 200 km north from Saint-Jérôme and Mont-Laurier, effectively opening up the region to tourism.
Parc national du Mont-Tremblant becomes Quebec's first provincial park. Today, the park covers 1,500 square kilometres, encompassing 400 lakes, 6 rivers and innumerable streams and waterfalls. It's also home to more than 200 species of birds and mammals.
Jackrabbit Johannsen pioneers skiing at Tremblant. By 1932, he had been appointed coach of the Canadian Olympic team and directed the clearing of Kandahar and Taschereau, the first two downhill runs at Tremblant.
Philadelphia millionaire Joe Ryan teams up with Jackrabbit to design and build Mont Tremblant resort, clearing new trails and installing a lift system.
One of the largest ski resorts in North America, Tremblant is also the only one with skiing on both the north and south face of the same mountain.
Intrawest purchases the resort and invests more than $50 million in the first phase of redevelopment to transform Tremblant into one of the world's premier four-season resorts.
Intrawest works on many fronts to turn its vision into reality. The resort's development is moving ahead according to plan – remaining true to the spirit and character of the local community and protecting and showcasing the majestic natural environment.
Versant Soleil marks the beginning of an exciting new phase of development at Tremblant.

4 million visitors visit Tremblant. The resort is once again voted the number 1 ski resort in Eastern North America (by the readers of Ski Magazine).
